Obstetrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the recuperative period following delivery. The use of ultrasound to view the fetus growing in the womb started not that long ago. Today ultrasound is an integral part of obstetric management. From confirmation of pregnancy and diagnosis of early pregnancy problems, diagnosis of fetal abnormalities, monitoring fetal growth to assessment of fetal well-being, ultrasound plays a pivatol role. The use of obstetric ultrasound has extended to prenatal screening, detection of preterm labour and more recently management of labour. Indeed todays obstetrician needs to be trained in ultrasound to provide good quality obstetric care to women.
